Who Are You?

What is man that thou art mindful of him?
Who Are You? Our Identity In Christ .

Psalm 8:3-6    Matthew 16:13-19

Psalm 8:3-6

3 When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained;

4 What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?

5 For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour.

6 Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all things under his feet:

Matthew 16:13-19

13 When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am?

14 And they said, Some [say that thou art] John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets.

15 He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am?

16 And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.

17 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed [it] unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.

18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

19 And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

Identity was a big issue in South Africa during apartheid.

  • Everyone had to apply for an identity document and be classified.
  • He and is sister were given different identities.
  • The devil sought to divide and conquer within his household.

Jesus was sure to identify Himself to His disciples so that they knew exactly who He was.

  1. He didn't want any confusion.
  2. The devil sought to confuse Jesus about who He was. "If you are the Son of God...."
  3. Jesus was not confused.

God wants us to know who we are.

  1. In Psalm 8 the question was, "What is man that you have made them a little lower than God?"
  2. Mankind (not angels / not ministering spirits) is created in the image of God.
  3. Mankind is given the mission and purpose of Jesus Christ. To carry the Power of God.
  4. Jesus was subtle about his deity.
  5. He was the Son of Man, 100% human, 100% God.

In Matthew, the Rock that the church is being built on is the revelation of who Jesus Christ is.

  1. We have been given the keys to the kingdom.
  2. The keys signify power that has been given to us.
  3. The power has been given to us to bind satan, the god of this world, and his activity.

God granted a visa to Pastor Fynn in an impossible situation to do work in Australia.

  1. This was done because God gave him power and an assignment to accomplish.
  2. There was a Mardi Gras service that the pastor preached at and he was given specific instruction by the Holy Spirit not to have an altar call.
  3. It turns out that there was a transgender man, dressed as a woman, who gave his life to God but would not have if there was an altar call
  4. He was transformed and now has his true identity.
  5. He got rid of his female clothing.

We have the keys to the kingdom, power to set people free.

  1. We have the Power to make a difference.
  2. Our past has nothing to do with our identity in Christ.
  3. We need to change our thinking to never forget who we are - we have the keys to the kingdom.
  4. We have the power to overcome darkness and to set the captive free through the revelation of who Jesus is.
