Sermon Notes | March 19, 2017

We need to have a balanced view and perspective of life as we look for the return of Jesus Christ

2 Peter 3:12-14    1 John 3:3

2 Peter 3:12-14

12 Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?

13 Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.

14 Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless.

1 John 3:3

3 And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.

4 Challenge Questions Related to the Return of Jesus

  • Why would Christians not desire passionately to be united forever with the Lord?
  • Shouldn't I be thinking about Him everyday?
  • Shouldn't there be an excitement, expectation and anticipation of the "great gathering" that is coming?
  • Have the cares of this life numbed us to the greatest event that will take place in this life?

Reasons we may not live like we should in expectancy of Jesus' return

  1. We don't want to be separated from our unsaved loved ones. We want to stay here and enjoy them / be with them for as long as we can. This is representative of our lack of trust in God's timing and sovereignty. God's timing is perfect and He knows what He's doing.
  2. We love the world too much. We are too much at home and comfortable down here. Having too many luxuries can cause you to become spiritually dull and less dependent on God. We also get caught up in serving God and don't want to stop doing our respective ministry duties. We get so caught up in doing things for Him that we lose sight of loving Him. The key is to love Him so much that we want Him to come back as soon as possible.
  3. We also may not want Him to come back because our own personal Holiness is lacking. We may not be submitting to the process of sanctification. We need God to pull us out of dark situations and take darkness out of us because, like Lot in Sodom and Gomorrah, we won't separate. The Holy Spirit gives us truth and is working on us right now. We don't know when Jesus is coming back so we need to allow the Lord to work on us.

There are a few things we need to do to re-focus

  1. Repent
Change the way we engage with the world and others. We are too influenced by the world and its ways.
  2. Humble yourself
Recognize that you still need to be worked on.
  3. Focus
Focus on impacting someone this week and be sure to communicate the knowledge of eternity to them in word or deed.
